June 23 is Olympic Day
Contrary to what you might have thought, "Olympic Day" is not an invention of the Hallmark syndicate to market another greeting card. In fact, I have yet to find commercially produced cards commemorating this day. Olympic Day -- June 23 -- is the date in 1894 that Pierre de Coubertin called a meeting of a dozen or so sportsmen at The Sorbonne, who christened themselves as the inaugural members of the International Olympic Committee, and out of which came the Olympic Games as we have come to know it today. So Olympic Day is the anniversary of the founding of the IOC, and is celebrated worldwide by events and activities coordinated by National Olympic Committees intended to promote health and fitness, as well as the values of sport -- the so-called Olympic ideals -- in society.
