It's (Almost) Finally Time!

After a seemingly torturous 11-month wait since the students were notified of their selection for CISB Seminar Abroad V:  2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, embarkation day -- August 3 -- looms near.  Our adventure will begin with a bus ride from the University campus to JFK International Airport, where we will hop a ten-hour overnight flight, arriving in the Olympic City Thursday morning.  Stay tuned for updates via daily posts!

Last night, PBS had a fascinating one-hour special on the 1936 Olympics in (Nazi) Berlin. It can still be watched online at:

This was followed by _The Boys of 1936_, which tells the "story of nine working-class young men from the University of Washington who took the rowing world and America by storm when they captured gold at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. Their unexpected victory, against not only the Ivy League teams of the East Coast but Adolf Hitler's elite German rowers, gave hope to a nation struggling to emerge from the depths of the Great Depression."

It can still be watched online here:

By the way, Rio de Janeiro also applied to host the Olympics in 1936!
