- The Games of the XXXI Olympiad will be held August 5-21 in Rio de Janeiro.
- The 2016 Olympics will be the first held in Central/South America, leaving Africa as the only continent never to host the Games.
- Olympic events will be held in four zones throughout the city: Deodoro, Copacabana, Maracana and Barra da Tijuca (see map, above).
- Rio expects to host some 10,500 athletes from 206 countries around the world.
- Organizers expect to sell 7.5 million tickets to spectators, including an estimated 500,000 foreign tourists.
- At the end of the Games, 306 gold medals will have been awarded in 42 sport disciplines.
- This edition of the Olympics will re-introduce two sports: rugby returns 92 years after its last appearance and golf is also back, 112 years after being discontinued in 1904.
- More than 50,000 volunteers will assist in the Games' organization.
- In its bid to host the Olympics, Rio de Janeiro budgeted 28.8 billion reais. Today, however, that figure has increased to over 37 billion reais (about $11 billion).
