The iconic Cristo Redentor (or Christ the Redeemer), one of the best-known statues in the world, stands 125 feet tall and sits atop Corcovado Mountain, the
highest peak in Rio de Janeiro at 2,329 feet.
The statue, completed in 1931,
was designed by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa in the Art-Deco style and is made of reinforced concrete and soapstone. Access to the top is via a cog rail train, where visitors are treated to spectacular panoramic views of the city and Guanabara Bay.
