While sport apparel companies spend hundreds of millions of dollars to lock up national team sponsorships to outfit players at the World Cup, shoes are considered competitive gear and are left to individual athletes (influenced, no doubt, by high-dollar endorsement deals). So it will be interesting to see clashes between team and athlete sponsorships, say for example Spain's Sergio Ramos wearing Adidas kit and Nike cleats. Although Adidas emerged the winner in kit sponsorships, signing 12 teams to Nike's eight, Nike says it expects that 60% of all players in Russia this summer will be wearing its trademark swoosh on their feet. Note to self: bring binoculars!
