Several would-be World Cup fans who previously bought and paid for their hotel stays, match and airline tickets, and obtained their Russian Government-issued FAN IDs (see earlier post), have since been notified that their FAN IDs were cancelled and they will not be allowed entry into the country. Apparently, certain national team supporters -- without warning or explanation -- received notices via emails and SMS from the Russian Government stating that their FAN IDs were revoked, despite already having them in their possession. Speculation is that these fans were subsequently identified by the FSB as threats to public safety, aka hooligans. Good to know that the authorities are cracking down to minimize the potential for trouble, especially in the wake of the melee between some Russian Ultras and English Roughs at the 2016 Euro in Marseille.
