Full First Day in Rio

With our help, Argentina beat Bosnia-Herzegovina last night, 2-1, and our delegation returned to our hotel hoarse and dead to the world, but deeply gratified to have attended a World Cup match . . . and in Maracana Stadium to boot!  Today, our day started at 6:30 a.m. with a morning run outside our compound, where Dr. Covell and I were joined by Tom Cowin and Jeremy Patti for about a 5 km run (about three miles, but they use the metric system here and 5 km sounds better anyway).  After morning seminar at 7:45 a.m., our schedule today called for visits to Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer Statue) atop Corcovado Mountain and the cable car rides up to Sugar Loaf Mountain in Guanabara Bay.  As can be seen in some of the photos, the views were spectacular at both locations.
Golden Bear is happy to be on this excursion, hitching a ride today in Mark Martinez's backpack!

While waiting for our bus, Jeremy Patti and Troy Tanzer befriended some Brazilian kids.  Viewers stateside should not be concerned, as the boys' parents were nearby, just outside of the picture shot.

As you can see, our delegation bus is cozy, with all manner of high jinks and merriment!

You can get a sense of the spectacular views of Guanabara Bay and Copacabana Beach to be had from the gondola cable cars, as well as from Sugar Loaf Mountain itself.

You probably cannot tell from this photo, but Sarah Babski, Jeremy Patti, and Troy Tanner are white knuckled from their death grip of the stainless steel pole at the center of the car!

Everybody loves to take a photo with a man in a cape . . . or is that the Colombian flag?  Left to right:  Irina Smith, McKenzie Pezze, Andrea Canales, "Flag Man," Mark Martinez, Ross Titelbaum, and Sarah Babski.

An interesting virtual meeting happened atop Sugar Loaf Mountain today.  Three English chaps told me that they "brought along" their friend (at right) to Rio since he was unable to make it in person, and they were delighted for their friend to be "introduced" to our virtual delegation member, Dr. Linda Jones.

A funny thing happened when McKenzie Pezze whipped out the American flag for a photo-op at the base of the Christ-the-Redeemer Statue. . . our delegation was joined by these interlopers!

This statue is of Cristoval Leite de Castro, who was the brainchild of the project that connected Sugar Loaf Mountain to the mainland via cable car gondolas.  He is joined by Sarah Babski, Tom Cowin, and Andrea Canales, who are expressing their affection and appreciation!

GB takes in the view of Sugar Loaf Mountain from its perch on Mark Martinez's shoulder.

"Someone, please give me a push. . . pretty please?"
